Nanotechnology

Engineering materials at very small scales

Nanotechnology studies structures and materials whose properties can change at nanometre scales. Researchers investigate nanoparticles, thin films, nanostructured coatings, sensors, membranes, and composites for medicine, electronics, energy, and aerospace systems.

Why scale matters

Surface area, quantum effects, and nanoscale structure can influence conductivity, strength, optical response, chemical reactivity, and catalytic behaviour. These effects depend on material composition and manufacturing process; not every nanoscale material automatically performs better.

Potential space applications

Lightweight composites, radiation-aware sensors, dust-resistant surfaces, improved membranes, and compact chemical detectors are possible research directions. Any flight application must pass tests for reliability, outgassing, thermal cycling, radiation, and long-term ageing.

Safety and responsible development

Editorial standard: distinguish established observations from active research and future concepts; check primary scientific sources for current evidence. Images are illustrative, not documentary proof.
